Ramsay Centre of Western Civilization brings Australians to the Graduate Institute

Thanks to the generosity of the Ramsay Centre of Western Civilisation many Australians have the incredible opportunity to study at the Graduate Institute at St John's College.

The Ramsay Centre shares in St John's vision that discussions with the greatest minds through the study of time-tested books is the most fulfilling way to learn about the richness, diversity and complexity of over 3,000 years of cultural and societal development of Western Civilisation. History has shown, and it remains a belief championed by the Ramsay Centre and St John's College, that a liberal arts education supports development of a more literate, wiser and more civic-minded society – one that understands its past, works to improve the present, and looks confidently to the future.

With St John's located in the historic state capital of Annapolis, Maryland, less than an hour outside Washington, DC, scholars are in a prime position to attain world-class vocational experience. The Ramsay St. John’s scholarship covers tuition and general living expenses.

In January, the Ramsay scholars from throughout North America, including those who are enrolled at St John's College visited the Australian Embassy where they discussed current affairs with the Australian Ambassador. The weekend involved a seminar on leadership and gave the scholars an opportunity to network with one another.

Following a tour of the Naval Academy in Annapolis, the Scholars returned to what is affectionately known as the "Ramsay house" to discuss several poems with Dr Emily Langston, the dean of the Graduate Institute at St John's College. Dr Langston kindly illuminated the college's unique approach to pedagogy. The democratic discussion which ensued provided powerful insights into the liberal arts education offered at St John's College.
